Here’s why you should always spank your watermelon.
My Persian grandfather loved fruit, and aside from pomegranate, there was nothing he prized more than the perfect watermelon.
The first thing he’d look for was the field spot, that pale patch on the bottom where the watermelon rests on the ground as it grows.
A creamy yellow or orange spot means it’s ripe, which passes his first test. But he never chose a watermelon just by looking.
He’d grab each one and knock it, thump it, or spank it.
And even though he might have looked a little crazy at the market, he was listening for a deep and hollow thump, which shows it’s also crispy and juicy.
